Building Trust in the Voluntary Carbon Market

During the recent GLOBE 2008 Conference & Trade Fair on Business and the Environment, the GLOBE Foundation announced plans to launch the GLOBE Carbon Registry this Fall 2009. The registry will record transactions of carbon offsets that conform to internationally recognized or other transparently described greenhouse gas (GHG) quantification standards.

The GLOBE Carbon Registry will provide a facility for many excellent climate change projects not yet certified to common standards to display the custom standard to which an offset has been validated and verified. The intent is to spur the use of voluntary carbon trading throughout Canada. GLOBE hopes to capture 20% of the carbon registry market with the registry and apply a unique serial number to each offset. This will ensure market integrity by avoiding double counting and allowing a chain of custody control from creation to retirement.

The voluntary carbon market presents a powerful mechanism for addressing climate change. Through stimulating innovation and encouraging action throughout many parts of the economy, GHGs can be excluded from the atmosphere while setting the technological, financial and educational pre-conditions for avoiding dangerous human-made climate change.

In creating a mechanism for displaying quality offset projects of all types, third-party validated and verified to a transparent standard, and tracking these offsets through the chain of custody, the GLOBE Carbon Registry will build trust in carbon offsetting and allow full realization of the potential of the voluntary carbon market. This will in turn enable customers in the marketplace to make informed decisions in selecting the offsets and the projects they wish to support.
