Romania Hydroelectric Project
|
|
Overview
This four-year project involved working with Romanian
authorities to develop a program of environmentally responsible
management practices in their hydroelectric sector. GLOBE and its
project partners BC Hydro International and INFORM
International, with support from the Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA), helped to strengthen environmental management
capacities of Hidroelectrica, Romania's state-owned
hydroelectric generation company, and the Romanian
Ministry of Industry and Resources that is responsible
for regulation of the country's energy sector.
Details
The GLOBE Foundation first took on this four-year, two phase
Hidroelectrica Project in 1998. The project was part of Romania's
overall hydropower reform strategy involving technical and
institutional assistance to encourage sustainable management of the
country's resources within a market economy context, and in
accordance with international environmental standards.
With Romania working towards developing a program of
environmentally responsible management practices in their
hydroelectric sector, the specific goals of this project were to
help strengthen the environmental management capacity of
Hidroelectrica (the state owned hydroelectric
generation company) and the Romanian Ministry of Industry and
Resources (responsible for the development and regulation of the
energy sector). The project also helped facilitate the development
and implementation of Hidroelectrica's Corporate Environmental
Reporting procedure. GLOBE provided technical assistance for the
preparation of the utility's first and subsequent Corporate
Environmental Reports towards this end.
The project enhanced the capacity of the Romanian public and
private sector to manage environmental issues in the hydro sector
and increased awareness of relevant Canadian technologies and
expertise. The GLOBE Foundation designed and executed the project
in partnership with BC Hydro International and INFORM
International, with the support of the Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA).
